Meet the Teams

Welcome to our teams and how they can support you throughout your journey as a researcher at Sussex.

The SRS is led by the Head, Susanna Broom, and the Dean, Professor Jeremy Niven. They provide leadership and direction on the provision and support for emerging researchers.

As well as supporting the smooth running of the SRS and the associated governance structures, the Administration team is the first point of contact for your general queries. They are also responsible for SRS communications, such as the newsletters; PGR Connections and The Sussex Researcher. The team also runs the Junior Research Associate scheme for undergraduate researchers.

The team supports the development of PGRs and ECRs through induction, training, writing retreats, funding opportunities, community events and awards. They support the PGR Experience and Researcher Development Concordat sub-committees, oversee the HR Excellence in Research Award, and run SussexDocFest and the ECR Symposium as part of the annual Summer of Research.

Ayla supports the delivery of the SRS’s vision as outlined in the SRS Enabling Plan. Working across the board on SRS projects that continue to improve the experience of emerging researchers at Sussex.

Fiona manages the quality assurance, policy and governance processes in the SRS. Her work includes reviewing of our regulations and policies.

The team provides support for external PhD funding bids and the delivery of Doctorial Training
Partnerships and Centres for Doctoral Training. Once funding has been secured, they liaise with PGRs on scholarship applications and funding statuses.

DISCnet Centre for Doctoral Training

Susanne manages the DISCnet Centre for Doctoral Training, a consortium of three member universities funded by the Science and Technologies Facilities Council, training a new generation of postgraduate data intensive scientists.

This Doctoral Training Partnership is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council to support postgraduate research across a consortium of eight member institutions. The central team is based at the ÅÝܽ¶ÌÊÓƵ in SRS.

CHASE studentships offer PGRs funding support alongside an extensive training programme,
placement opportunities and researcher networks. CHASE also runs a bi–annual Encounters conference and publishes an open access student journal, Brief Encounters, curating original and creative contributions from PGRs and ECRs.
