Literature and Society, 1750-1890 (939Q3B)

30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)

Autumn teaching

The Literature and Society, 1750-1890 module looks at how literature and social ideas influenced each other during the late 18th and 19th centuries. It helps you see the big picture of how society and culture changed during this time, while also diving deep into the key thinkers and writers of the period.

You’ll explore how literature interacts with social theories—sometimes agreeing with them, sometimes challenging them. Each seminar will focus on close readings of both literary texts and social philosophy, comparing and contrasting how these different forms of writing approach similar ideas.

This module is about understanding how stories and ideas shaped society—and how society shaped the stories of the time.
