Education, Theory and Practice (162X3)

30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)

Autumn teaching

This module provides you with the foundation for the entire MA, and will enable you to begin the process of relating theory to practice by analysing and evaluating the literature on critical reflection.

In addition, you'll gain knowledge of topics in education and apply the process of critical reflection to aspects of your professional life and practice.

You'll also be encouraged to deepen your theoretical and conceptual knowledge of a particular area of education through more extensive reading of the literature. You'll evaluate its significance to your own professional or context-bound learning.

Areas could include:

  • children's learning and motivation (psychological, sociocultural, etc.)
  • supporting students with English as an additional language or special educational needs and disabilities
  • teacher development
  • assessment
  • learner-centred pedagogies
  • curriculum development
  • pedagogy for creativity.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 267 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.

We’ll make sure to let you know of any material changes to modules at the earliest opportunity.
