We start this edition by bringing you news that registrations are now open for Research with Impact Day, taking place on Tuesday 7 June 2022 at the Bramber House Conference Centre. Join us for a day of networking and showcasing activity, discussions and training sessions, and the return of our impact awards, which celebrate the creativity and commitment of those pursuing and supporting research with impact at Sussex. Don't forget there is still time to apply to participate in the Research Staff Showcase - a unique event, part of Research with Impact Day, dedicated to celebrating the research achievements and impact of Sussex Research Staff (deadline for applications is 20 May). Also included in this newsletter edition, we would like to particularly highlight:
- Coming up in May, Learning at Work Week, aims to engage and inspire people around lifelong learning. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the huge range of learning opportunities available to all-staff at Sussex.
- At the Research with Impact Forum on Thursday 10 March, a panel of stakeholders presented on the different aspects of the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers and its implication for Universities, Schools, Researchers, managers of Researchers and funders. Please see below news story for a recording of the presentations.

Research with Impact Day is on Tuesday 7 June - register now! Join us at the Bramber House Conference Centre on Tuesday 7 June 2022 for a day of networking and showcasing activity, discussions and training sessions, and the return of our impact awards, which celebrate the creativity and commitment of those pursuing and supporting research with impact at Sussex. Registration is free, and all staff are welcome from across the academic Schools and the Professional Services; we’d like to especially encourage Research Staff to attend. Hear from four Sussex researchers whose impacts were submitted to REF 2021, speaking about the various approaches, opportunities, challenges and successes they’ve experienced on their pathways to impact. Afternoon parallel training sessions 13.45-15.15 - Integrating impact into your funding applications 13.45-15.15 - Achieving impact through knowledge exchange and commercialisation 15.30-16.30 - Pursuing policy impact 15.30-16.30 - Increasing the visibility of your research Research with Impact Awards Reception 16:30-17:30 Terrace Room Join us to celebrate the outstanding work of your colleagues in pursuing or supporting research impact at Sussex. Whether well-established or just emerging, a team effort or individual achievement, PI or Professional Services, our Awards recognize and reward the commitment of those who are pursuing real-world change through research, and making a vital contribution to our impact culture. Eight winning entries will be awarded £1000 and a certificate. The Awards will be introduced and presented by PVC-R Keith Jones, and will be accompanied by refreshments.

Still time to apply to the Research Staff Showcase event! Deadline for applications Friday 20 May We would like to remind you that there is still time to apply to participate to the Research Staff Showcase event, that will take place as part of Research with Impact Day on Tuesday 7 th June (please see above news story for more details). Dedicated to the Research Staff community, the Showcase event features marketplace-type ‘stalls’ at which researchers present their research and activities with posters, publications, policy briefs, postcards and any other materials that you may wish to display. It’s a chance a to promote yourself and your research, but also an opportunity to network amongst new and familiar colleagues. The Research Staff Office will be available on the day to support setting up and taking down of the stalls, as well as arranging and funding the cost of printing posters and other materials prior to the event. Please note that successful applicants would need to provide any materials that they would like printed and displayed to the Research Staff Office by Thursday 26th of May. Learning at Work Week (16th-22nd May) Coming up in May, Learning at Work Week, organised by Organisational Development, aims to engage and inspire people around lifelong learning. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the huge range of learning opportunities available to all-staff at Sussex. With appraisal conversations just around the corner, this is a good time to think about your development and how Sussex can support your learning. Here are some examples of what’s on offer;
- On Tuesday 17 May you will have the opportunity to meet some of the Apprenticeship Training Providers in person over a cuppa and cake, please book your place .
- The Organisational Development team are hosting a live Q&A session on ‘How to learn at Sussex’ on Wednesday 18 May from 12.00 to 1.00 pm. In this session you will have the opportunity to find out more about learning at ÅÝܽ¶ÌÊÓƵ, like coaching or mentoring, management development, wellbeing, menopause awareness or how to support your team with hybrid working. Whatever it may be, ask a member of the Organisational Development team about how they can support you. If you would like to join, please book your place .
- On 26 May from 11.05 am to 11.55 am, D&I Leaders are hosting a webinar on Unlocking Imposter Syndrome & Igniting Inclusion. In this interactive conversation, expert panellists will explore what effects imposter syndrome has on staff and organisations and how workplace leaders can step up to create an environment where imposter syndrome doesn’t exist. Race against dementia fellowship This supports early-career scientists in their pursuit of innovative solutions to the big questions in dementia research. Fellowships are worth up to £500,000 each over five years. Deadline for Applications: 6th July 2022
