SEDarc - South East Doctoral Training Arc DTP

Welcome to the South East Doctoral Training Arc (SEDarc) at Sussex!

SEDarc is our newest Social Sciences postgraduate research programme, commencing in 2024 and funded by the il (ESRC).  The 6 partner Universities are:   (lead institute); ; ; and the ÅÝܽ¶ÌÊÓƵ.

While registered for a SEDarc Sussex degree, you are expected to:

  • Conduct an independent, challenge0led research project achievable in 2.5 years
  • Complete a Development Needs Analysis (DNA) and follow 200 houts per year of subject specific training and wider professoinal development (logging your training on the SEDrac Inkpath system)
  • Undertake a funded, three-month placement which can be completed flexibly (part-time, or in several blocks)
  • Receive a scholarship covering fees, a living allowance and research expenses, for a minimum of 3.25 years OR 3.5 years for a PhD including the placement OR 4.5 years for a Masters+PhD programme
  • Submit, at the end of your funding, a new style of PhD thesis which includes reflection on your training journey, your placement and knowledge exchange activities. 
Additional funding

As SEDarc student, you have access to addtional funding for:

  • research and training costs (covering conferences, participant costs, UK fieldwork) for a maximum of £3000
  • Overseas fieldwork (maximum £4000 total)
  • Language training (Difficult Language Training, or DLT, which can extend your scholarship
  • Spending time at a university or research institute abroad if you successfully apply for an Overseas Institutional Visit (OVI) or overseas placement
