Your Root to Sussex
We’re proud to have planted 2,470 trees as a thank you to visitors who travelled to our 2023 and 2024 Open Days by public transport. We're now pledging to plant more if you travel by bus or train to our Open Days in 2025.
About the scheme
As part of our vision to be one of the most sustainable universities in the world, we have pledged to plant a tree for every prospective student that travels to one of our Open Days by public transport.
Despite the train strikes, 1,171 people travelled to campus by public transport in June and October 2023. Across 2024, another 1,299 people travelled to our Open Days by public transport. The 2,470 trees were planted in surrounding Sussex target areas to increase biodiversity and Sussex water quality. This also means over 31 tonnes of CO2 emissions were avoided by those who travelled to our campus by public transport (estimated calculations made using ). This is the equivalent to one person flying more than three and a half trips around the world via plane.
With many visitors expected at our on-campus events this year, we’re encouraging you to lay down roots for change by choosing 'Your Root to Sussex', supporting our sustainability vision and becoming part of the growth to a better future. You can do this by travelling by bus or train, to reduce carbon emissions and think about your environmental impact/footprint.
For 2025, we will continue to work with the South Downs National Park Trust to help reach their target of planting 100,000 trees as part of their .
