Energy and Climate Policy MSc
“I graduated with a degree in geology 30 years ago, when a career in the oil and gas industry felt like an appealing option. I began working as a geophysicist in seismic exploration, analysing vibrations sent deep underground to reveal the oil and gas reservoirs under the Earth's surface.
However, I began to feel uncomfortable with my work, particularly after lockdown when climate change was becoming more noticeable. I just couldn’t see a future in oil and gas anymore. I wanted to learn how I could contribute to transforming the global energy system, so decided to enrol on the Energy and Climate Policy MSc course at Sussex.
Along with being able to attend classes in person, I appreciated that the course draws on expertise from the internationally renowned Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) and the Sussex Energy Group. It really felt like the right choice for me.
My Masters gave me opportunities to explore data models, sector politics and the energy system more broadly while equipping me with new skills in critical thinking, technical writing and referencing. It also helped me to understand climate change policy and the function of events like COP, along with how we’re addressing climate change issues in the UK.
After completing the course in October 2023, I set my sights on working for Ofgem, the energy regulator, and began working as a Policy Officer in February 2024. Among other priorities, I focus on ensuring the security of our electricity supply, and working to ensure the wholesale market is fairer and more efficient.
In my interview, I told Ofgem I wanted to do something that made a difference, and now I get to work across areas that impact all of us. Everyone pays for the capacity market in their bills, and I feel like I play a part in benefitting everyone. I’m continuing to grow my experience in areas such as project management, alongside enhancing - and contributing to - how policy is formed and implemented.
My time at Sussex gave me the confidence and the background I needed to move from seismic processing into a new and rewarding sector. I’ve since been promoted to policy manager at Ofgem, and I find this stage of my career to be a lot more rewarding – I just wish I’d done it earlier.”
