Politics from Below: Cooperation, Conflict and Resistance (L2112)

Autumn teaching

This module investigates state-society relations in a comparative manner and focuses on the relation between public institutions and civil society. 

In this module, we’ll explore:

• how public policy has changed with the shift from traditional government to modern governance
• the rise of organized civil society groups
• the spread of radical protests and resistance against political elites
• the role of civil society and social movements in promoting democracy in the public sphere
• new ways people participate and engage in politics at national, international, and global levels
• key contemporary case studies that bring these ideas to life.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 300 hours of work. This breaks down into about 30 hours of contact time and about 270 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2024/25. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
