Gender, Space and Culture (V3053)

Spring teaching

On this module, you'll explore the significance of space in understanding communication, identity, and power dynamics. You'll examine how spaces are moralised, gendered and imbued with symbolism, considering their dynamic, unstable and mutable nature in relation to social differences. Key theoretical concepts include:

  • performativity
  • representation
  • exclusion
  • intersectionality.

Topics include:

  • gendered journeys such as package holidays or migration
  • social inclusion and exclusion
  • leisure and pleasure
  • safety and public space
  • work
  • challenges to spaces traditionally understood as feminine or masculine
  • queer cultural geographies
  • the spatial politics of protest on the streets and in the home.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 150 hours of work. This breaks down into about 21 hours of contact time and about 129 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.
