Fee status
The tuition fee you pay depends on your fee status category and if you are classified by the UK Government as ‘home’, ‘Channel Islands and Isle of Man’ (‘Islands’) or ‘Overseas’ (or ‘International’ as we refer to it at Sussex).

We charge fees at different levels:
- Home rate
- Channel Islands and Isle of Man (also referred to as ‘Islands rate’)
- Overseas rate (also referred to as ‘International’)
Our fees are subject to annual inflation and may change in line with government policy.
Fee status classification
Your fee status is determined in accordance with UK government regulations. Regulations around fee classification are complicated and you can check your fee status at the website of the .
The assessment of your fee status is made during the admissions process, based on the information provided in your application. Your fee status will then be listed on your offer letter. You should review your fee status before accepting your offer.

- Home
For entry in September 2025 for the academic year 2025/26, the tuition fees charged to Home students will be £9,250.
These fees are set by the University but are subject to UK Government confirmation and regulatory approval. Your fees may be subject to an increase on an annual basis as the Government reviews the fee levels.
Deferred entry
For Deferred entry in September 2026 for the academic year 2026/27, the UK Government has not yet confirmed the tuition fees. The University intends to set fees at the maximum permitted by the UK Government subject to regulatory approval. The current annual fee is £9,250.
Fees may increase for both new and continuing students in subsequent academic years as the Government reviews the fee levels. We expect 2026/27 fees to be confirmed by autumn 2025.
- Channel Island and Isle of Man
For entry in September 2025 for the academic year 2025/26, the tuition fees charged to Channel Islands/Isle of Man students will be £9,250.
We align Islands tuition fees with the tuition fees charged to Home students. These fees are set by the University but are subject to UK Government confirmation and regulatory approval. Your fees may be subject to an increase on an annual basis as the Government reviews the fee levels.
Deferred entry

The University has two standard fee levels for Overseas students. For entry in September 2025 for the academic year 2025/26:
- lower tuition fees: £22,575

The fee for your chosen course will be listed in your offer letter. You can also check the fees section on the relevant course page.
Fees are set to increase each year over the duration of your degree by 3% per annum (subject to rounding for administrative purposes, and assuming you do not have a break in your studies or change to a different course with a different fee level).
Integrated Foundation Year
If your offer is for an Integrated Foundation Year, to start in September 2025 for the academic year 2025/26, the tuition fees will be £22,575 (the standard lower rate of Overseas fees). The fees for subsequent years will depend on your choice of course after successful completion of the Foundation Year (and may be subject to the standard higher rate).
You’ll be able to see the 2025/26 fees for your choice of course by checking the fees section on the relevant course page. These are fees for students admitted in September 2025 and are set to increase each year over the duration of your degree by 3% per annum (subject to rounding for administrative purposes, and assuming you do not have a break in your studies or change to a different course with a different fee level).
Deferred entry
For Deferred entry in September 2026 for the academic year 2026/27, the lower and higher tuition fees (and the percentage uplift that would apply for subsequent years) will not be set until autumn 2025.  They will then be published in our courses.
To give you an idea, for the 2025/26 academic year the standard lower rate is £22,575 and the standard higher rate is £26,250.
Tuition fees vary depending on the degree course. If you consider changing course, you may wish to check the new fee.
- Pending
If your fee status is showing as ‘Pending’ during the application process, it means that we don’t have enough information to determine your fee status and you’ll need to complete a Fee Status Questionnaire. This will allow us to check your fee status and what fees you need to pay.
Until we can accurately assess your fee status, your fees will be set at the higher of the available fee levels (which is the Overseas fee rate) and this is the amount which will initially be listed in your offer letter.
You can access the Fee Status Questionnaire in your applicant portal, within the supplemental items and documents tab. You’ll be sent details of how to log in to the applicant portal separately. Once you complete the questionnaire and upload any required documentation, we’ll assess your fee status.
Until you complete the Fee Status Questionnaire, your fee status will remain ‘Pending’. If, when you come to register, your fee status is still pending then you will default to Overseas for fees purposes. If you do not think you should be paying Overseas fees it is essential that you complete the Fee Status Questionnaire as soon as possible via the applicant portal. - Pending EU (PEU)
If your fee status is showing as ‘PEU’ during the application process, it means that you have declared you are an EU student with settled or pre-settled status. You’ll need you to complete a Settled/Pre-settled status form so we can determine your fee status and what fees you need to pay.
Until we can accurately assess your fee status, your fees will be set at the higher of the available fee levels (which is the Overseas fee rate) and this is the amount which will initially be listed in your offer letter.
You can access the Settled/Pre-settled status form in your applicant portal, within the supplemental items and documents tab. You’ll be sent details of how to log in to the applicant portal separately. Once you complete the form and upload any required documentation, we’ll assess your fee status.
Until you complete the Settled/Pre-settled status form, your fee status will remain ‘PEU’. The tuition fees for entry in academic year 2025/26 have not been published yet. We follow the fee levels set nationally by the , who publish fees between March and April each year. Course fees may be subject to an increase on an annual basis, and any increase in fees would normally be line in with what is set by UKRI.

Requesting a review of your fee status
If you disagree with your fee status after the assessment you should first request to have it reviewed. You should email the relevant office asking for a fee status review:
- ug.applicants@sussex.ac.uk (Undergraduate Admissions Office) if you want to study an undergraduate course
- pg.applicants@sussex.ac.uk (Postgraduate Admissions Office) if you want to study a Masters
- PhD.applicants@sussex.ac.uk (Postgraduate Admissions Office) if you want to do a PhD.
You can submit extra evidence and we might ask for more information. We then send you an email or letter to confirm your status.
Appeal your fee status
If, after the review, you believe there are grounds why your fee assessment is still incorrect, you can appeal the decision by emailing feeappeals@sussex.ac.uk, explaining why you disagree with the outcome of the review.
We will reassess your case and respond to confirm our final decision on your fee status classification.
You must submit any appeal of your fee status classification before you start and register on your course. After you register, your fee classification will not normally change except in certain circumstances, such as:
- if your circumstances change (for example, you become a UK national or get refugee status) so that you may potentially qualify for a different fee status. UKCISA set out the limited circumstances in which a student’s fee status can change part-way through their course; information is available on the . Securing funding from the Student Loan Company does not automatically ensure that your fee status will be changed
- if you can evidence that the University made a material error in its initial fee assessment which affected the outcome of the fee assessment
- if you met the criteria for a different fee status at the point of registration, but this information was not reasonably available to you at the time.
