Music ensembles and societies

Join a music group, band or choir, show off your musical skills in our symphony orchestra, or write for our student newspaper. We know your student experience doesn't stop when you leave the classroom, that's why we have a range of clubs, societies and activities to help you build the skills for your future.

Big Band 

The Sussex Universities Big Band is an events band comprised of musicians from the ÅÝܽ¶ÌÊÓƵ and the University of Brighton. Based at ÅÝܽ¶ÌÊÓƵ, the band plays at a range of events each year from university balls to weddings and private parties. 

Chamber Choir

The Sussex University Chamber Choir is open to students and members of staff. It meets every Monday in term time in the Meeting House from 6pm to 7.30pm. The choir sings at the official University Christmas Carol Service on campus and puts on a concert at the end of the Spring term.  

Symphony Orchestra 

The ÅÝܽ¶ÌÊÓƵ Symphony Orchestra is open to students from both the ÅÝܽ¶ÌÊÓƵ and the University of Brighton. String, percussion and brass players above grade 5/6 standard are welcome with no need to audition. Auditions for woodwind players are held at the beginning of the academic year.

Sussex Sounds

Sussex Sounds is the University's very own show choir! They recreate their favourite tunes, from 'September' to 'When the party's over'. This is an inclusive group of lovely singers with different experience levels, who perform regularly at showcases and events such as the popular Northfield Takeover. They also have a talented competition choir who has won 'Masters of Show Choir' twice!

A Cappella Society

Join them as they cover pop hits, rock anthems, musical belters and more. Each group rehearses once a week, and they also run a wide variety of socials, from drinking and clubbing nights to chilled games nights - both for group members and also socials open to everyone!

 

Ukulele Society 

Ukesoc teaches the ukulele and gives opportunities to play with the society. Sessions are available for beginners or advanced players.

Live Music Society 

Get involved with the live music scene at Sussex. Whether you are a performer, a hobbyist or just a general music lover, everyone is welcome! There are a variety of different events from jam sessions to open mics to club nights and much more. There really is something for everyone.

Alternative Music Society 

Alternative Music Society is creating a community of non-mainstream music fans to bond over alternative music and sub-genres. Their aim is to connect and discover music that will bring people together and revive the alternative music scene there once was at Sussex. They put on events including listening parties, vinyl record nights, album discussions and visits to gigs.

 

Drum and Bass Society 

Calling all Drum and Bass heads, true Junglists, or people who simply want to find something new, listen up! This society will take you on a journey through the music of jungle/drum and bass.

 

Rock and Metal Society 

For those passionate about rock, metal and everything in between. 

 

Techno and House Music Society 

Society for all the crazy gals and pals that want to get together and enjoy some good house and/or techno. Some of the things they do: organise nights out to listen to favourite DJs in Brighton and London, host house parties with live DJ sets, share the best new techno and house releases on social media and add them to their Spotify playlist.

University Radio Falmer (URF)

Our university radio station - URF - broadcasts online. The station has a packed daytime schedule and during the evening offers a diverse range of programming, run by Sussex students. There are a variety of opportunities at the station from getting involved in events to production, tech, and managing.

The Badger

The Badger is the Students' Union weekly news publication, written and designed by Sussex students.

The newspaper represents the views and interests of students and communicates the work of the Union. It also informs students about local, national and international issues.

You can get involved by writing reviews, sending in photographs and editing articles.

UniTV is an award-winning TV station run by students. It features broadcasts based on university lifestyle.
