Introduction

Francis Birrell (1889–1935) was a critic and journalist associated with the Bloomsbury Group and a friend of the novelist David Garnett. Birrell’s papers comprise letters and postcards, chiefly to his father, politician and essayist Augustine Birrell. There is also a collection of photographs (over 140) and papers relating to Francis Birrell’s work in France for the War Victims Relief Committee of the Society of Friends, 1915–20. Both Birrell and Garnett served with the Committee from 1915–19.
