Computing support

Facilities

The Department of Informatics maintains its own computing facilities that are managed separately from central IT facilities. There is a common infrastructure to both services that include email, filestore, networking, and student printing, but Informatics provides additional support for several hundred desktop and portable computers of its own, many of which are installed in specialist teaching and research labs. The supported platforms in Informatics include Windows 7, Mac OSX, and Scientific Linux.

The Informatics computing support team has three full-time members: Chris Sothcott (IT Laboratory Manager), Malcolm Tam (Windows Systems Administrator) and Paul Keene (Apple Macintosh Systems Administrator).

Advice and assistance

A local helpdesk provides support that is specific to the needs of Informatics research students and staff. Helpdesk staff have considerable experience of the Informatics facilities and the specialist requirements of Informatics users. If you require any advice or other assistance with the computing facilities in Informatics, please contact the helpdesk in the first instance.
