Estée Lauder

Estée Lauder Companies welcomed Sussex staff and students to their headquarters in London. Made possible by alumna, Anna Bartle, the event gave students an insight into how the corporate world approaches wellbeing at work.

Inside the Estée Lauder office spaces in London

Anna Bartle graduated from Sussex with a BA in American Studies & Literature 1991. Now Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Estée Lauder Companies, she invited Sussex students to their London HQ and hosted an event focused on well-being in the workplace. Opening with a panel discussion, Anna was joined by Mo Abbas (Law, 2014), co-founder of Trademark Brothers and Civil Service Fast Streamer, and Dr George MacKerron, Senior Lecturer in Economics at Sussex and co-founder of Psychological Technologies.

A whole range of topics were discussed, from the role of building design and office location in promoting well-being to the benefits of flexible and agile working; what’s required to aid flexible working; the need to let go of “permission-based” culture in the office; as well as pets at work and mental health first aiders in the work space. The event also provided students with the opportunity to network over a glass of wine and a canapé reception.

Events like these provide students with a fantastic exposure to the working world. It helps them to understand in practical ways the dynamics of the office environment, to think about the skills they need to develop and hone as they consider their career after University.

The event was also open to alumni who were asked to make a donation to the Sussex Fund if they wished to attend. The proceeds went to supporting students at Sussex experiencing financial hardship, or struggling with mental health issues.

We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of alumni like Anna who help us not only to offer exclusive and exciting events to our community, they contribute to the provision of life-transforming hardship bursaries and vital mental health support through their support of the Sussex Fund.” robert yates
