Biography

Michael joined the ÅÝܽ¶ÌÊÓƵ in September 2023 following a period as founding Director of King's College London’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Director of the UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Safe and Trusted Artificial Intelligence. As Professor of Computer Science at King’s, he previously held the position of Executive Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, and prior to that Head of the Department of Informatics. Before joining King’s he was Professor of Computer Science at the University of Southampton, and Lecturer at the University of Warwick.

Michael has worked on artificial intelligence for over 30 years and has published over 300 articles and 12 books. He advises several AI companies, is member of the College of Experts of Department of Culture, Media and Sport (previously Digital, Culture, Media and Sport), and is member of the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Strategic Advisory Team for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). He is also a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence, the British Computer Society and King’s College London.

Michael is a member of the University Executive Team, the University Leadership Team, Council and Senate.
