DIY Digital Preservation

A casual online search for ‘digital preservation’ will produce long lists of results detailing high level conceptual definitions, references to policies and strategies, and links to the good work of large organisations explaining how they preserve their digital assets. This can give the false impression that only large institutions with huge resource can do effective digital preservation. It also risks leaving individual researchers or small organisations overwhelmed and unsure where to begin on their own digital preservation journey.
This session on ‘DIY digital preservation’ will offer practical insights into the core concepts and tools of digital preservation, suggesting ways that you might begin developing digital preservation workflows of your own. With a focus on freely available software and concrete demonstrations of workflows used within the Library, the session aims to instil a pragmatic sense of how digital preservation can be incorporated into your own projects whilst demystifying a discipline that can often seem abstract and inaccessible.
This is an introductory session suitable for all levels of experience. No previous knowledge of digital preservation is necessary to take part. The session will be interactive and have optional opportunities to try out some tools and processes for yourself.
The workshop is open to Sussex humanities and social science researchers at all levels (please register using your @sussex email address). Please bring along your laptop if you wish to do so. A list of recommended software will be issued prior to the session for you to install in advance.
