What are the orange icons that appear on some web pages?

The orange icons - which usually take one of the following forms:

RSS icon

indicate that what is known as an "RSS feed" is available for that page.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and is a file format used to automatically notify people about content changes on frequently updated web pages such as blogs or news items. The RSS file itself contains a summary of the item(s) on the page and can be subscribed to and read using a specialised piece of software called an "RSS Reader". Some web browsers also have the ability to read RSS feeds built in; in particular, Firefox allows certain feeds to be added as what are known as "Live Bookmarks".
