Full Module Description

This module will introduce two of the major literary genres – short prose fiction and lyric poetry – as well as a historic range of literary writing through the study of significant works of English and American literature, and important texts in translation. Based on close reading, you will consider how literature portrays both the interior qualities of the human self and the external world – the social, cultural, scientific and historical fabric from which literary texts emerge. Encountering different methods of interpreting literature, you will be encouraged to develop as a critical thinker and an expressive writer.

Module Outline

Module learning outcomes

Understand basic methods for the analysis of literary texts and apply them in constructing coherent critical analyses of specific literary works.

Recognise the formal and thematic conventions associated with some of the major literary genres, and explain their role in specific literary works.

Demonstrate a basic understanding of the relationships between literary texts and their historical contexts.
