Module Outline

Force, moment of a force; Static equilibrium; Plane trusses; Centroid. Friction.
Kinematics of particles: linear motion of a particle, curvilinear motion, characteristics of the motion in various systems of reference.
Kinematics of rigid bodies, translation, rotation about a fixed axis; plane motion;
Kinetics of particles and rigid bodies. Application of Newton's second law. Moments of inertia. Impulse-momentum equation; Angular momentum; Impact. Work-energy equation. Dynamics of a rigid rotating about a fixed axis. Dynamics of a rigid in plane motion.

Module learning outcomes

Evaluate the conditions of equilibrium of solid objects and make sound judgement whether statically determinate or indeterminate methods apply.

Understand the concepts of velocity and acceleration and evaluate them for various kinds of motion of solid bodies.

Apply the knowledge and underlying principles which govern the interactions between solid bodies to study their motion.

Understand the basic theory and concepts of mechanical vibrations of structures and calculate main characteristics of motion.
