Module Outline

This module introduces the operating principles of various vehicle propulsion systems and their integration into a range of automotive applications:
• Electric vehicle propulsion: Motors, batteries, charging, battery management systems
• Fuel Cell systems: Balance of plant, analysis of operating performance.
• Internal combustion: Operating processes and analysis of performance including efficiency, power output, fuel consumption and emissions.
• Low emissions: Systems to reduce emissions and improve efficiencies including after-treatment systems, exhaust gas recirculation and turbocharging.
• Alternative carbon-free fuels including hydrogen and ammonia-based internal combustion engines.
• Hybrid powertrains: Combinations of power sources, design of hybrid architectures, energy management strategies.
