The ÅÝܽ¶ÌÊÓƵ this week launched an Emergency Ukrainian Students Sussex Fund Appeal to provide urgent hardship bursaries and scholarships to Ukrainian students affected by this war who require assistance. All donations to this Emergency Appeal will be matched pound for pound, and more than £10,000 has already been raised by 183 donors in less than 48 hours.
In the past few weeks, we have seen further destruction of cities across Ukraine, unimaginable suffering and loss of life, and the displacement of almost 3.5 million people seeking refuge from the carnage of war.
We have also started to see the impact of these heart-breaking events on our own students from Ukraine. Whilst thankfully they are physically safe from the horrors of the war back home, distance has not insulated them from the tragic events still unfolding.
Trauma, anxiety and deep concern for their loved ones, as well as added uncertainty about their future, and growing financial worries about their ability to make ends meet without family support are just some of the unforeseen pressures suddenly faced by these students.
Interim Vice-Chancellor, David Maguire, said: “I very much hope that you will wish to join us in offering some comfort to these students in their hour of need. I am fully aware that you may have already supported some of the many charities providing humanitarian help to those affected by the war and may not be able to help us on this occasion.
“However, if you feel able to make a gift towards Ukrainian students whose lives and education have been turned upside down by the war, your support would be immensely appreciated. No gift is too large or too small.”
Whatever you give we will match pound for pound.
The generosity of Sussex staff was made apparent by the tremendous response to last year’s Afghanistan appeal. Your donations can help us provide the necessary financial assistance to all Ukrainian students who need support to feel safe and to continue with their studies in the most challenging of circumstances.
